Feather your Nest Friday, 1st January 2021.

Hello friends!  Welcome to 2021! Happy New Year!

I hope you had a good Christmas.  We did.  It is hard to describe but I knew so many people could not be with their family for Christmas and that many millions of plans fell to pieces.  Even the tunnel from England to France was shut.   This one thing alone just before Christmas made me think of how many happy plans would fail.  So we were very lucky.   We did things differently to our traditions.  Without Dad we made new ways and new traditions.  He loved Christmas!  He would have wanted us to celebrate and give the children a beautiful time.  And we did!    In the media I saw the words "Christmas is cancelled" many times over.  Oh, no it was not!   No one gets to cancel Christmas!

Even the chickens had a special day!

We had a beautiful day.  I counted many blessings.   These two were so excited!

Some of my photos of the day are really special to me.  This is Scarlett and Sidney looking at Daddy.  See... a picture does tell a thousand words!

After Christmas I was completely exhausted!!  I think emotions are just as tiring as anything.  But it was also a busy week leading up to Christmas Day.  That would be the same for everyone I think!

As I skipped posting last Friday I have a lot of nesting to report!

I am picking zucchini daily so I made two big Zucchini slices.  They were yum.

Now I am picking tomatoes as well.

I planted out more basil, squash, tomatoes, chard and capsicums to try and extend my season.

I joined Shabby Art Boutique and began some paper crafts.

I have a goal of making many things that will post in a regular card.   In The Tuesday Afternoon Club I want to start the year off well.  By making things all year I did manage to give a lot of homemade Christmas presents and have many gifts over to use for Birthdays also.   It was fun!   We all worked along together, encouraged each other, gave each other so many ideas.  Also online and in person friendships were made!    In a year with lots of lockdowns and reasons to stay busy at home we produced so much!   It was very cheerful!    Contentment is great gain.  If it's a good idea not to go out for a while then yay I am going to be happy in the sewing room!  When I feel stressed I stitch and bake.

I finished a pram rug for a friends baby.   It is pure wool left over from Sidney's blanket.

Falling in a tired heap after Christmas gave me some thinking time.  It is good to stop and think things over.  I could step back a little and assess what is working, what is not.  What is important and what is not.
It is a big adjustment to consider 2020 and all that happened.  There was a lot of talk about seeing the year out and welcoming a new back to normal year.   I didn't feel that way.   I felt that approaching Christmas there were just no signs of that at all.

I've been writing about preparedness for four years now.   My confidence has increased in the area of having a feeling about something,  "knowing" something you can't know...  I understand not to ignore that now.   I think God had to speak to me with a sonic boom and persistence.  Then I listened.   I admire his patience to stick with me at all.
Now I am listening in a new way.  Like the camper in the forest at night, hearing a twig snap and listening so closely for another tiny noise!   I have never felt the need to be so acutely watchful as now.   Or to prepare more.

Laine has sent me many more letters.  She is writing now as she feels the same...   Also their Pastor told them to go home and to prepare. And she is.  We are working on our pantries in a challenge together.   And we are making it fun!    Oh, it is so nice to have a friend to work alongside!
I want this to be a place where we can do that.  Work together! Encourage each other!

God will help.  The other day I was just amazed.  We are in fruit season right now.  I wanted some of the cellophane jar tops we use here in Australia.  They come in little packs with labels and rubber bands.   They have become hard to get.  I looked in both our local supermarkets.  None to be found.
(While I shopped I should have taken photos!  There were very few good fruit or veggies.  Cucumbers were actually rotting on the shelves.  I have never seen it this bad before.)
On the way home as I come into our driveway I collected my mail from the mail box.
I had three parcels!  I love mail and I love parcels!
When I came in the door my first thing is to put away all the cold foods and freezer foods so I did that first.  It was a little later before I got to open my parcels.
There was a parcel from a dear friend. She sent me the best things!  Guess what was in the parcel?  The jam toppers I could not find!   My needs were sent to me even before I had realised they were not available!

In this way my pantry and freezer were built up so much during the last two weeks!

We were given bags of bread rolls.  Left over ham, roast beef and venison.
Mum gave us a Turkey roll.
I spent half a day making the ham up into the rolls, wrapping and freezing them,  portioning out roast meat into meals size packs, labelling and freezing.  Into the freezer it all went.  We also lived on left overs for a couple of days.

We went to a big party.  I took a bucket to that party!  I took it to the kitchen and said that I have chooks and please don't waste the scraps!   I came home with TWO whole buckets of bread, salads and meat scraps.   In fact there was so much meat I made up bags of meat for Scout and got 14 days worth for her.

It kept going!  Andy was given Prawns which he basically lived on for a couple of days and then was given a Lobster!

I was given lemons!

I could not believe all of this!

It gets better!
I have been really working to build up my sewing pantry.   On eBay I bid on two lots of old sewing supplies.  I didn't expect to get either.  But I got both!   They both arrived here on the same day!

This was one.  The other was a big sewing box.  In all I had over 300 reels of cotton.  Scissors, seam rippers, tapes, thimbles, elastics... it goes on and on.

Many reels of cottons on old wooden spools.  Some are just gorgeous...

In this instance it was cheaper than op shopping/thrift shopping.  I am good for cotton supplies!

I gave one of my bags to my neighbour for Christmas.  She loved it!  And I gave silk scrunchies too which also went down well!

In the store I stocked up on vital vitamins for this time (Zinc. C, D, etc.) at under half price!

Each day I am trying to sew for at least a half an hour.  I have more bags cut out and fabric for a little dress for Scarlett.   The weather has warmed up a bit so quiet sewing in the hottest part of the day is a good way to go.

We would love to hear how you are doing and how you built up your nest this last fortnight.
Happy New Year and we will make the very best of 2021! xxx

  1. What lovely cottons. I adore the old wooden reels and always keep an eye out for them in op-shops. The colour of the pram blanket you've made is just gorgeous too. Your Christmas sounds a wonderful time with your family gathered and happy. We shared our Christmas with close family and a had a simple lunch together. I portioned up the leftover sweets, generously left to us by my sister-in-law, and froze them rather than leaving them in the fridge where I've no doubt they'd disappear very quickly! Happy new year to you. MegXx

  4. Our Meijers had turkeys for 19 cents a pound so I bought 2 twenty pounders. Enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner and then chopped up some dark meat for soups, stews, pot pies, etc and shredded some for enchiladas, quesadillas, tetrazzini and turkey salad spread. Sliced the white meat for sandwiches. All portioned out in meal size amounts and Into freezer!

My friend who works at Krogers told me that her store had Nestles Baking chips on sale for $1/bag so I restocked my butterscotch and mini semisweet chip supply. I still have sufficient milk chocolate and dark chocolate ones.
They also had sugar for 99 cents/bag, so I bought 36 pounds for our pantry (9 bags) to restock.

When my friend called to tell Me about this sale, I went on to the group text I have with 3 of my daughters to see if they wanted some. They gave me their “ orders” and I picked up those too and then they stopped over and reimbursed me as they took theirs home. We did that recently when one daughter found 1 pound bags of SAF instant yeast marked down to $1.35/bag! We all told her how many we would like and she picked up enough for all of us! Another daughter has a small meat market near her and does the same thing with meat sales. It’s a good system that benefits all 4 families!

    1. Dear GardenPat, What a deal on turkey! I just love roast turkey. But then there is so much to do with leftovers! I wish I could get $4 a pound turkey let alone 19c.
You did well on the baking chips! I love that you ring the daughters and they all get in on the act. We do this too! More eyes watching out for good deals is a big help. I think we need to up the anti on these kind of shopping techniques! It all helps! Have a very Happy New Year. With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Annabel, I so agree with that Christmas was not cancelled. We did see two of our sons and families on separate days and it was so wonderful to see them after so long. After they were all gone I did just sit down and cry because I was so tired but it was worth it all. Your grandchildren are darlings and I love the Christmas dresses. We are still mindful of keeping all our supplies topped off and are being mindful and watching. This mess with our election is foremost in our minds until it is all settled and we are praying daily for our country. Happy New Year!

  6. Happy New Year, Annabel!! It sounds like you had a lovely Christmas. Christmas was nice here as well. the only thing I missed was going to church. In order to keep us safe, our pastor had asked that no one over 70 and no one who lives with someone over 70 attend. My mom lives with us, so I couldn't go, but I was able to watch online.
What sweet calendars you've made and that pram blanket is just beautiful.
How wonderful that you found those old sewing supplies online. I have a number of those old wooden spools of thread that were my grandmother's along with spools of her crochet thread and hooks and sock darner. I haven't used any of those thins as I prefer to save them for now, but I do look to purchase the same things that I find in the thrift stores/antique shops.
You were certainly blessed with a lot of food. That is just wonderful. That is amazing how much was discarded at the party.
I did a store run prior to Christmas to stock more frozen veggies, canned salmon and other canned goods. Since it's winter her in the States , no garden now. The seed catalogs will be arriving soon though and planning can begin. Blessings, Laura

  7. Please check all the cotton threads before sewing with them. Pull the thread hard from the spool and if it breaks easily it is rotten and will fall apart when you sew. This is true of cotton thread but not polyesters. I love seeing how you build up your pantry and use many of your ideas myself. We have had very quiet holidays here in North Carolina USA. The virus is running rampant so we stay home mostly. My pantry and freezers are full and we only need things like milk and eggs occasionally. We are in winter and soon will be gardening ourselves - can't wait for that. Thanks so much Annabelle.

My you get daughter said to me she plans to do some serious stocking. I was thinking YES!!! Hope your week is going well! With love Annabel.xxx

  8. Dear Annabel, that photo of your grandkids looking at their Dad is SO special. It is beautiful. I also love their Christmas outfits. Well done on that cotton, I love the old wooden reels. Like with everything they don't make things how they used to. I love how you got the scraps for the animals from that party-what a great idea and so much better for the environment too. Your blanket is stunning- it really is a piece of art. I love the sound of the Shabby Art Boutique club. Those calendars are so pretty. It is funny people have been saying oh it will be all over with the vaccine soon, 2021 will get things back to normal, but I actually feel like preparing even more. There is a definite need to prepare. I need to pray on this and listen. I would love to hear how you and Laine are preparing your pantries. I have been crocheting. Plus writing down goals for my diary, even small practical goals like changing over pegs to steel pegs. I need to change overdo some longer term solutions. Love Lily

I dont think we will be back to normal at all either. Now this "virus variant" is the next new thing... I just dont feel confident however I wish we were wrong!
I do have to think about new pegs! mmm I was so excited about my new line I didn't think of the pegs! Have a good week Lily, Love Annabellxxx

  9. I strained out the apple scrap vinegar I'm trying to make and got about 6 cups total. That is free except for the sugar (4 tbsps I believe) so if it makes it will be a good thing and not expensive at all.

I am starting a Pantry and freezer challenge for January and will use my grocery money to help pay for necessary doctor visits as well as stock up on things I know are low.

Now that the weather here is cool, I am letting the bread machine make my dough but baking in a loaf pan and forming some into rolls, too. We don't mind the heat of the oven this time of year and my husband is really enjoying the rolls.

We've been doing some necessary yard work, pruning and trimming back. I hope the roses appreciate my hard work!

I am glad you had a lovely Christmas. Ours was quiet with just our youngest daughter and her little family with us. I cooked my first ever venison backstrap and it was like filet mignon it was so tender.

I was able to buy a lovely new slow cooker, but I am not parting with my old broken one. I discovered I could get crock pot liners at my local dollar store for about $2/box of 4. This is 1/4 the price of the same product elsewhere. I was able to put the liner in my cracked crock and use it just the same. I'll keep it on hand just in case I need an extra or back up and I'll make sure to have some of those bags on hand as well.

Soon I will have apples. I really should give vinegar a go. I also have bottles!
Venison back strap is beautiful! Sometimes we get it. It is all in pretty light cooking and it is so tender!
The liner in the crockpot is a great idea. You can also use two or more liners in one crockpot... I have done mains in one and desert in a another or veggies I want to keep separate. It is good! But I love a new crock pot too! My favourite handmaiden I think!
I hope it has been a good week Terri. With love Annabel.xxx

I loved seeing the family photos and how adorable your grandchildren are. Beautiful memories to be cherished. 😊
I love how abundance finds its way to you and how much you achieve with what is put into your hands. It is inspiring!
Building up my pantries this year even more and that includes all areas. I like what you added to your craft pantry and the ideas for sending flat items as expensive postage is often the prohibitor of sending more gifts.

  11. We spent Christmas week at my son's home in eastern Idaho (525 miles from us). We came home on Christmas Day--a day early because of a big snowstorm on its way. Since then, it's been a pretty good frugal week for me, mostly devoted to cooking and using up leftovers. I was tired of cooking and freezing by New Year's! As a result, dinner tonight was grilled cheese sandwiches and canned New England clam chowder, plus some leftover raw veggies and dip.

    * Using up the last of the pre-Christmas ham...I made ham stock and turned it into about a gallon of bean soup. I also made a big batch of cornbread, ate both for two meals and froze all the leftovers for two more meals. I also made about a cup and a half of deviled ham (we ate it on Ritz crackers for lunch) and froze 7 meal-size packages of ham cubes.

    * I spent $77 for a 12 lb. prime rib for Christmas (a steal @ $5.68 lb.) but the most I've ever spent for a roast. This was my contribution to Christmas dinner at my son's (we ate it Christmas Eve). These are the meals we ate--5 people for Christmas dinner; 5 French dip sandwiches next day; left enough meat with son and daughter-in-law for another meal for two; with meat brought home, we had 3 servings of the roast with Yorkshire pudding for one dinner; French dips for 3 for another dinner; and I made about a quart and a half of vegetable beef soup with the bones and the leftover au jus (from a mix--we ran out of the real stuff, LOL). We didn't waste a morsel and enjoyed every bite! Also, I'd never made Yorkshire pudding before. I made minis in a muffin tin and they were outstanding!

    * Thanks to suggestions from a frugal bulletin board I frequent, I used milk that was starting to "turn" in the cornbread, Yorkshire puds and two batches of waffles (got a new waffle iron for Christmas). All were delicious!

    * My daughter wanted something festive for New Year's Eve. I went through my fridge and came up with raw veggies and ranch dip and a salami and cheese tray with Ritz crackers. I had to buy ranch mix, a small package of dry salami and sparkling "blush" apple juice...not bad for a party. We skipped dinner and just snacked around and, no, we did not stay up until midnight.

    * I used a 40% off JoAnn's coupon to buy a new seam ripper, saving $1.60. (Every little bit helps). I used $25.20 in Office Max Rewards (from the battery deal) toward a 4-pack of printer ink. I turned in 3 used cartridges for $6 more in Rewards.

I have been enjoying Laine's Letters. Does she pronounce her name "Lane" or "Lainie"? Just wondering!

  13. Annabel I am so glad you and your family had a wonderful Christmas together :) . We are often blessed by God through others and you have been abundantly blessed especially on the jar covers that turned up along with many things gifted to you both.

Your crochet, paper craft calendars and baking all look lovely and the sewing cottons, tapes and rippers are just amazing.

We also had a good Christmas together and did a lot of volunteer work for the RSL setting up food for their Christmas function. We also did some paid cleaning and mowing the RSL grounds jobs as well. Had a great time with friends and neighbours at the function too.

I too did not feel confident at all that the New Year would bring a normal year either in fact the opposite after so many people were on the move visiting family and friends I thought more virus surges and in a few states that has been true. We shopped ahead on groceries in mid December to get us though to almost February and been working on tracking down spare parts for our gardening equipment to have on hand here as they have been hard to get many times.

Our Vicky challenge added up to $161.85 in savings for the last two weeks :).

    Earnings -
    - We earned $150 from cleaning and mowing jobs.

    Financial -
    - Deposited more money into our 6 month living expenses emergency fund bringing us to 61.07% if the way there and banked more into our home maintenance fund bringing us to 62.08% of the way to our goal.

    Purchases -
    - Bought 2 x 8" after market wire weed brushes for our brush cutter saving $82.44 on usual prices we saw for original brand items.
    - Bought Egyptian cotton bath towels, floor mats, hand towels and food storage containers on up to half price specials saving $32.75 on usual prices.
    - Purchased a 4.262 kg whole rump for $16.99 kg saving $12.82 on usual prices. We cut it up ourselves and portioned it into 15 double serve portions for the two of us for the freezer.
    - Sourced our ride on lawn mower blades online and saved $13.83 on usual prices. I also ordered a spare set to have here too as they are really hard to find.

    In the kitchen-
    - Cooked all meals from scratch.
    - Baked 4 loaves of a combination of wholemeal and white saving $10.36 over buying them locally.

    In the gardens -
    - Picked 556g of green beans from the gardens saving $4.95 over buying them in the supermarkets and we blanched and froze them for 4 more meal size portions for the two of us.
    - Harvested 2 large cucumbers from the gardens saving around $5 over buying them.
    - We finally had time to weed some more of the gardens so they are looking much more tidy.
    - I tied up the tomato plants that are getting quite big to garden stakes and I am pleased to say they now have small tomatoes on them.
    - Both of us mowed the lawns twice since we have had so much glorious rain.

Hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead :) .

It is great you had a good rain. Things would be looking good. Nothing does the garden good like rain. It sounds like you will be picking tomatoes soon.
Buying in larger amounts and portioning it out is a saving I am using more and more. It takes some work. But you can get often many more servings that you even think. I have a kind of challenge to get as many meals ahead as I can.
You really are getting there on this savings goal! I will celebrate with you when you get to 100% and I like how motivating you make the challenge!

  14. Dear Annabel,

Happy New Year! We had a lovely Christmas...by ourselves, but that's usual for us since we live so far away from all of our extended family. We spent lots of time on the phone with everyone that day, so that was nice. Our Christmas Eve "midnight" service was beautiful...candles everywhere and poinsettias...and the organ playing for the first time since March. We even found out that we WERE allowed to sing...just very quietly (and distanced, of course), so we had carols after all. The tears were streaming down my face in gratitude and thanksgiving! (Our church is huge and there were probably 30 people there, just to put it in perspective.) It might have been a crazy year in many ways, but I look back and the word that instantly comes to mind for 2020 for us is: blessed. We were so taken care of by the Lord, even in the face of several challenging situations...I am so thankful to God for his mercy and care. That said, I am happy to usher in a new year!

Your calendars that you made are beautiful, and the girls with their little dresses are adorable. Now is the time I start planning all my projects for the year...too many, as usual, but it's fun to plan!

Looking forward to reading here each week in 2021! All the best to you and all your family.
