Feather your Nest Friday, 18th December, 2020.
Here we are one week until Christmas Day! It was a good and busy week. Once again we had some rain. Half an inch! This is amazing!
Some of the ways I built up my home this week were:
I used lots of cherry tomatoes (from Wendy) to make pizzas.
I was able to buy 12 bottles of conditioner for a very good price and build up my bathroom supply cabinet.
This week I needed to go to the city as I had to go to the dentist. I am glad that is out of the way. While travelling I went to a couple of thrift stores. I found two beautiful books for next years card making. One of them was only 25c!
Perfect for cards, gift boxes and gift bags. Some of the images are like this one:
So already I am excited about next years crafts. These will make gorgeous cards and other things too!
In the op shops I also found some cottons, fabric and beautiful ribbon. With extreme luck I found one more roll of French Ribbon that I must have missed last time, along with everyone else apparently!
I attribute this to the fact I sat on the ground and went though a whole box of odds and ends and there it was right at the bottom.
Mum and I visited Lucy and her family. The girls were wearing the little dresses I made them.
With boots mind of you.
On my travels I found a little dog house. I think it is gorgeous. I was on my own and it was a struggle but I was not leaving it there on the road side.
I am going to paint it up. I am thinking it could suit some of many Bantams, or ducklings or who knows what. But I love it!
While in the city I did an Aldi stock up. When I came home my car was pretty loaded up!
I managed a little bit of sewing. I was making fabric gift bags. Mum has put orders in for some as she feels done with gift wrapping! So many remnants I have will become gift bags.
Now I need a day by day plan for the next week. But I think it is going well.
Laine's Letters have been doing me good. It feels just like old times. I feel energised after reading them. Laine and I are helping each other with a kind of pantry challenge. We are building our pantries together. I do well when working along side someone and I do well with challenges! It is funny how are all all different and what works for one might not for another. But if you know what motivates you it is a big help. I can get ten times more done this way!
The next letter from Laine is on Pantry Building.
I hope you had a good week. Lets work at making the coming days as lovely as we can. People have had a hard year. We might have to be creative with how we do things since visiting might not be possible or wise. But there are ways and we ARE creative! As we bless others who need it we will find that beautiful Christmas spirit that is hard to describe. So beautiful. Little kindnesses really do go a long way and make a difference.
How did you build up your home this week and how are you going with Christmas preparations?
Have a lovely weekend. xxx
I almost forgot my animal photo of the week. This is what I get when I say "who wants a biscuit?"
Hi Annabelle, your bargains are always so amazing! I don't go out much because of the covid but today I had a dermatologist appointment so stopped at Dollar Tree and enjoyed looking at everything and found a few little things for stocking stuffers. The little girls are so cute and look darling in their dresses and boots. Another blogger posted about Christmas will be Christmas covid or not and it is about Jesus birth. A good thing to remember in these times. Hope yours is a nice one. Merry Christmas. Nancy
ReplyDeleteDear Nancy, Thank you! It would have been a fun trip to Dollar Tree. We dont have that store but we have similar type stores and I love them!
DeleteYes you are right. There have been Christmas Days in wars and pandemics and all sorts of times but it is still Christmas! And people have celebrated anyway they could. Nothing can stop Christmas! Have a very Happy Christmas Nancy. With love Annabel.xxx
What a lovely post! Your granddaughters are growing up so quickly and that look from the dog and cow just made my day! We are celebrating the birthday of our 4th grandson who made his glorious entrance into the world on Monday. :) He lives too far away for us to see him in person right now but we are being sent pictures and videos daily and try to do facetime visits as well.
ReplyDeleteDear Debbie,
DeleteCongratulations! That is beautiful news, a Christmas baby! Have a wonderful Christmas. It is great you are getting daily updates! With love Annabel.xxx
The dog house is so cute Annabel! I can imagine your determination getting it in the car! The girls look very happy with their dresses, so lovely! I wrote a long comment last week and managed to lose it before submitting sorry. I love the gift bags, I must make some for next year as I've stopped using gift wrap. I think it makes the present seem a bit more special as well!
ReplyDeleteMy kids finished school this week, I'm so happy. There are always so many events at the end of the year. Even though they are lovely celebrations it's also nice when it all comes to a stop. We have had nice sunny days so have been for a walk each day.
I went to Spotlight today and bought 4 large remnants of fabric for $4. Two are over a metre, the other two are close to a metre. So I was really happy with that! I haven't done much sewing with my machine this year but have some plans that I'm looking forward to getting stuck in to.
This week there will be some baking, cleaning, and hopefully lots of excitement and fun leading up to Christmas. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Christmas, whatever that looks like this year. I definitely feel we have plenty to be grateful for here!
Sending much love to your family Annabel, I hope it's a lovely day with two new family members and of course thinking of you and your mum especially having your first without your dear dad.
Jen (NZ)
Dear Jen, Yes you imagined right. You know me well. The kennel didn't really even fit in the back of the car but I only drove one street with the back door not shit properly! I wasn't leaving it! I also bruised my legs! haha!
DeleteI know just how the end of the year events and tiredness were. That has stuck in my mind and Lucy has been going through it with the girls.
I hope you all have a lovely week and enjoy quiet, baking and the lead up. Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy it all! Thank you for your thoughts. We have heaps to be grateful for. Dad loved Christmas. He would want us to celebrate and we have the beautiful girls and new boys to celebrate with. With much love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, I love the photo of the girls in their dresses. I also love that animal photo- Scout's smile! It really looks as if she is smiling. They are great finds from the op shop. I have to say I haven't been getting much extra done lately. The basics have been it. I really want to do fabric gift bags. I just love the idea of them. We are doing something different with my side for Christmas this year. I think we have realised that it is being together that makes it. I have been one lucky and grateful recipient lately. A mum I know of older children passed down a whole boot load of toys to me and then another friend gave me so many of her husband's clothes (he was doing an update). How thoughtful! I need to pass this kindness on now. I am thinking of you and your family at this time, Annabel, you and your dear Dad are in my thoughts. Love Lily
ReplyDeleteDear Lily,
DeleteScout has a smile for sure. When I drive in the driveway from anywhere she just smiles so much. She is so sweet.
It is wonderful that you were given all those toys and clothes! How helpful! Yes we can help others and to me it seems when we do more help is given to us too. It goes around!
Have a wonderful Christmas week! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, Oh my gosh - cuteness and cleverness all through this post. I am ending the week well - seven more jars of Apricot jam are cooling on my bench. I have decided to make the two and a half hour drive to my parents tomorrow. Otherwise I won't see them for Christmas - Christmas sort of snuck up on me in a way which is quite a silly statement lol. I have a box of jam to share packed in my car. It will be nice to hand deliver my cards to some of my siblings. I also will be giving Mum and Dad a photo calendar I created on the computer. I was able to get all 6 children and partners, 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren in it. I am quite proud of it. I put all birthdays, school holidays etc to help Mum out - there are so many to remember now. This is a project I have thought about and intended to do each year for about 5 years - so it was a great feeling to actually do it. I am looking forward to next week - finalizing everything, hanging out with family and enjoying the season. Have a great week everyone. Love Clare
ReplyDeleteDear Clare,
DeleteThe apricot jam sounds beautiful! I love apricots and they are Andys favourite.
I hope you had a beautiful visit with your Mum and Dad. They will love the photo calendar! You went to a lot of trouble and it is so special you included everyone!
I love the whole idea and to include the birthdays and everything to help your Mum keep track of them all. Beautiful gift.
Enjoy this Christmas week Clare! With love Annabel.xxx
Love, love love the dog house as is. Soooo cute! I can see it decorated for Christmas next year also. And, I made a lot of gift bags this year using Christmas scrap materials. Such cute ones you made!
ReplyDeleteDear Harriet, Thank you! I am rally liking the gift bags! Well done one getting some made-up. Have a wonderful week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteSuch good deals and a lovely week. I love the little gift bags you making. Those are so pretty. May you and yours have a blessed holiday.
ReplyDeleteDear Cheryl, Wishing you a wonderful week and beautiful Christmas! With much love, Annabel.xxx
DeleteLove the dog house - I was actually thinking that it might make a good doll's house!
ReplyDeleteYou certainly covered all the bases with that trip to town - I've been doing the same, if I have to go out I make it a worthwhile journey.
A girl I used to work with used to make gift bags, cushion covers, tree skirts for Christmas, roll them all up and give a set as gifts - I still use the tree skirt and cushion covers!
I had planned to wait until Sunday to do my final shop but my office got a tip yesterday that we'd be going back into a hard lockdown by Sunday at midnight - so - I went out yesterday and hit the library, drugstore, fruit & veg shop, ATM and grocery store. Today I had to go into the office for an hour so after I left there I went to another drugstore to get something specific, added money to my transit pass and bought a couple of bottles of wine - I am DONE!
The only reason to leave my apt. for the next two weeks is to take out the garbage & recycling and to take the occasional walk. Our numbers are climbing alarmingly so it's time to lock myself in again. Our various levels of govt. have done a good job about everything except for enforcement. There has been too much "educating" and not enough cracking down as far as I'm concerned and now we are all paying he price. I really wish they had been as serious about things as Australia and some other countries have been - there is a bit too much political correctness here I'm afraid.
Have a lovely week.
Dear Margie,
DeleteYes this little house is so cute. It could be a doll house even. But I have so many animals and know I will have more so little houses are needed!
I love the gift idea of the tree skirt and cushion covers etc. Very nice!
I am so glad you are done with your shopping in time and before lockdown.
Stay safe and sound. That is the main thing. I am glad you are ready so have a good Christmas week. With love Annabel.xxx
Merry Christmas , Annabel and everyone.
ReplyDeleteYou have the absolute best luck at the thrift stores. The girls look adorable in their dresses and boots.
I wouldn't have left the doghouse by the road either. If I would find a wonderful freebie I would determine to get it into the car.
Love the retro kitchen fabric you used on the bags.
The precious dog look is darling. Blessings, Laura
Dear Laura,
DeleteMerry Christmas to you too! We would make good road side "shopping" partners! I am sure I am so determined on some things I have super human strength in the moment and then wonder why I did that the next day!
Have a beautiful Christmas week Laura. We just saw Jupiter and Saturn side by side, the Christmas star! A bit special! With love, Annabel.xxx
I wonder if you ever just stop and do nothing. From all you achieve each week I dont think you do. That little doghouse is going to end up a wonderful item at your place. Some animal is going to love their new home. The girls look adorable in their Nan Nan Bel dresses. I must say that all little girls look just right when wearing dresses and gumboots together.
ReplyDeleteI had hoped things would slow down this week but they havent. I have made myself two new dresses out of fabric that was gifted to me and a pattern I have used many times before. I have one more cut out and want to get that made this weekend. I started a crochet blanket three weeks ago and was determined it would get made by Christmas. Given how hot it is here over Christmas this is probably a silly present. However it is for my daughter. Her Birthday is today so it is either today or in six days that she gets this gift. I made it to be used as a throw for her new lounge in her new house.
Bluey has been keeping the garden alive for me whilst I have been madly finishing this blanket off. I am so glad everything else had already been completed for Christmas gifting. We have had a small amount of rain and are celebrate every precious drop. With Bluey's efforts, some fertiliser and the rain, out place is lovely and green.
I added a ham and a Christmas hamper to out pantry this week. I won the ham in the Boat Club raffles. It is a 5.5kg leg ham so we will be fine for ham for Christmas. I won the hamper in a lucky door prize at our Quilting end of year party. Most items have gone into the pantry. I made a widower neighbour a Christmas pudding a month ago and Bluey took it to him yesterday. Our neighbour brews his own alcohol. I received a bottle of brandy from Sam and this is now in my cupboard.
I hope everyone has a wonderful week in the lead up to Christmas. I hope you all have a wonderful and blessed Christmas. Sending you all big squishy hugs.
Life is good when squishy hugs are involved.
Dear Jane, Thank you, that is a compliment from you as you get so much done.
DeleteYes dresses, boots, bandaids haha!
I thought your dresses were just perfect. The throw was also a major accomplishment!
I am so glad your garden is so green. We have kept having a little bit of rain. Nothing does as good a job as rain does.
I couldn't believe your prizes! Just amazing. And the barter of the pudding and the brandy! Bonus! Really a wonderful week. Now we are down to the last few days but all the work is paying off! With love, Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely and productive week you had. The girls are so adorable in their dresses and boots. I marveled at your op shop finds. The book that you got for 25 cents sells here in the US new for $37 new. I love all of the gift bags you're making and I wouldn't have left that dog house either. Last weekend was a baking marathon. Usually my daughters would come for the weekend and we'd all bake together as we have done since they were young children and their husbands would watch the football games. This year was, of course, very different for us and we decided we would continue our baking and just be in contact with each other on the phone as all of our states are in a "stay at home" order right now. Then we all made our contactless deliveries to friends and neighbors. It was different but still fun.
I built my pantry this week with meals for the freezer, making 48 homemade chicken sausage patties, 2 quarts of coconut milk, and I found an interesting gluten free recipe for calzone dough made with white sweet potato and arrowroot flour and nothing else. I made the dough for the calzones and filled them and baked them in the airfryer where they got a wonderful flaky crust. These are now something I will make again and just freeze before baking. I made peanut butter and rocky road fudge for us. I made more bone broth. Time was spent in the craft/sewing room cutting out embellishments for cards, boxes and bags. Card embellishments were added to things I can barter with. Like you, I'm excited about starting crafting for next year as well as planning next year's vegetable garden. I love a pantry challenge and this year participated in Patsy's "every little bit counts" and really was surprised at how much got put up . We had about 12 inches of snow in our area this week and thanks to a well stocked pantry there was no need to go out .
In this last week before Christmas, even though things are different for our family we still have much to be grateful for. Wishing everyone a good week ahead and a Happy Christmas. Blessings, Cookie
Dear Cookie, I love how you still had your special baking day, together but apart!
DeleteYou added a lot of ready to go things to the freezer. So helpful.
I loved the every little bit counts challenge. It was very motivating! A foot of snow is amazing to me! Good thing you can stay in. You have worked a long time to be ready for such times!
Have a very Happy Christmas Patsy. We both have suffered big losses this year. In fact the year is hard to fathom. But we have blessings too. With love and hugs, Annabel.xxx
Oh how I enjoy your blog, and especially the photos of the animals. I laughed out loud at the photo today, I think that is Laffie? And what a look on the dogs face ;). Thank you and Laine also for laine’s letters. I had found old ones on line and read most of them but what a wonderful thing to read her new comments. Merry Christmas and happy new year. Hilogene in Az
ReplyDeleteDear Hilogene,
DeleteThank you so much! I am also loving and thriving on new Laine's Letters. It is so nice to start up again all these years later. Laine said now is a good time as things have changed so much! Have a very Happy Christmas and New Year to you and your family also. With love Annabel.xxx
Could you share how to get on Laine's Letters mailing list? Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteLaine doesn't have a blog or mailing list now. For this time she is posting her letters here. You can subscribe on the home page on the top left there is a subscribe button so you dont miss any. There are quite a few letters lined up and another one published since you commented. Have a very Happy Christmas! Love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel and how lovely you were able to find the lovely fabrics, ribbons and spools of lovely sewing thread too for your sewing pantry. How lovely about the lovely quality thick velvet coats that you can use for bag making and other things as well. I am sure the chickens or ducks will love the new dog house shelter too :).
ReplyDeleteYour gift bags look divine with the lovely ribbon embellishments and the girls so country sweet in their new dresses you made and gumboots. The lovely roses books will make lovely cards as well.
Like yourself Annabel we are exploring different areas for groceries and other household pantry needs :) . While we were in another larger town on an appointment we had to stop into a restaurant wholesale supplier to pick up some Christmas things for the local RSL club. It suddenly dawned on us that they also sell directly to the public so whilst there had small look and found their prices were very good for lots of bulk pantry items and other things as well. Next time we are in that town and have more time we shall have a much better look and compare prices on items we usually buy and buy more in bulk if the prices are right :) .
Our Vicky challenge added up to $90.63 in savings last week :).
In the kitchen -
- Made 2 x 700g of wholemeal bread with a free supermarket sample of wholemeal self raising flour saving $5.98 over buying them in the supermarkets.
- Cooked all meals from scratch.
Income -
- DH and I earned $100 for the month doing a cleaning job each week for one of the local clubs.
Internet listings -
- Listed 10 items on an eBay free listing promotion saving $16.50 on usual listing fees.
Finances -
- Got an email from the bank where we keep our emergency fund that they are reducing interest rates substantially from what they were. We had a family financial counseling session together and decided to withdraw our funds at the end of the month and look for alternative banks and other ideas to maximise our savings.
- I deposited more money into our 6 month living expenses emergency fund bringing us to 60.43% of the way there.
Purchases -
- Bought 2lts of Worcestershire sauce from a wholesale restaurant supply store saving $8.15 over buying it in smaller bottles at the local supermarkets. I keep $20 aside out of our grocery budget to spend on any good specials/markdowns etc on goods in one of many pantries in our home.
Home maintenance -
- We replaced a tap that wasn't working that gravity feeds water from our rainwater tanks saving us $60 or more over hiring a plumber to do it for us.
Hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead and a joyous Christmas.
Sewingcreations15 (Lorna).
Dear Lorna, I think it is a great idea to use the wholesaler. This would also give you an extra option and options are good! I imagine they might have weekly or monthly specials too and to keep an eye on those.
DeleteIt is now a real issue about where to put savings. I did the rounds of the banks too a couple of months ago. I am not keen on risk but I also would hope for some return!
Your emergency living fund has grown greatly! Well done.
It has been very big year for you. For us all really. But you have done so well and come so far. I hope this Christmas will be a lovely one for you and the new year will be an easier year! With much love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteYour gift bags are so nice. I am always in awe of how talented you are with every thing you do.
Your grand daughters are beautiful. I have lost track of time and can't remember their ages. I have to stop to remember how old I am, these days (LOL). I used to remember names, dates, information, genealogy back 12 generations; alas, age struck.
We are still adding, as needed, to our deep pantry. Most of our seeds for 2021 have been purchased.
I saw yesterday, in the news, that a variant form of Covid is spreading rapidly in Great Britain, so they are shutting down again. Any such happenings in Australia?
Your OP shop finds are always amazing and lovely.
Love and hugs to all the Bluebirds,
Glenda
Dear Glenda, I also live in Australia, so hope you don't mind me replying. There are orders in place for residents in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney until midnight Wednesday, at this stage and of course due to this borders 'have shut their doors' to the residents of Greater Sydney. It is all unfolding each day, as it is in the rest of the world. Ever changing, it is hard to keep up. Keep safe. With love, Lily
DeleteThank you, Lily, for the information and your reply. It was very kind of you. I pray that you and yours are well and safe, also.
DeleteWe are in our 70's and our children are inquiring as to how are these times different than in the past. They are much different than anything we have lived through. However, my grandparents and my Dad lived through the Pandemic of 1918, World War 1, World War II, the Great Depression and, hence, the Nazi's. My mom would talk about how hard times were during the Depression. She was some younger than my Dad, so wasn't around during the 1918 Pandemic.
History always repeats itself, due to lack of learning, lack of wisdom and the failure to put God first. Sadly, we are witnessing many of the same behaviors that were prevalent in the past that led to bad outcomes.
Many blessings to you, Lily, and thank you again for your reply. Hugs, Glenda
Dear Lily, Thank you for replying to Glenda. It is so sad how many people will not see family this Christmas. It is awful.
DeleteGlenda, As far as I know we have renewed lockdowns and restrictions in Australia but so far not the new strain the UK has. But I would guess that is a matter of time as we are closed off from other states but I think people from UK will come in... and that will be that. I was shocked seeing Britain was cut off even the tunnel to France is closed. an absolute crisis. At Christmas. It is really breaking my heart for the lonely and those missing family.
Thank you for your kind words! I cant wait to show you my finds from this week! My sewing pantry is having a good amount added to it!
Have a wonderful Christmas Glenda. With love Annabel.xxx
Your grandbabies are adorable! Scarlett is as big as her sister now! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. I can't wait for the new year and hoping and praying for a better 2021 for all of us!
ReplyDeleteDear Kathy, The girls look like twins now, size wise at least! I hope you have a beautiful Christmas too and a very happy New Year. With love, Annabel.xxx
DeleteI feel as though I've been absent forever! It's been one thing after another here so I don't know if I'm coming or going! We decided to skip our Christmas gathering here this year because of the Co-vid but some family members couldn't stand it so, last minute decision, I have family coming on Christmas Eve. I had already regretted canceling so I'm okay with it but shish, I'm having to put it in high gear! My son-in-law has agreed to barbeque so that takes a load off me. I haven't done a lot to build up the pantries except I canned 12 pints of chili and dried some apples this week. I worked on doing an inventory over the weekend and today I went to town for a final stock-up before the new year. We have completed several house projects so there hasn't been much time for creating but I'm hopeful for January!
ReplyDeleteAnnabelle, I can't wait to see what you do with the lovely books and other materials you found! The details on your little house are amazing. I wish I could have seen you loading it up :D. Sounds like something I would do! The little girls look precious in their new dresses. Those smiles! I know they are a blessing to you.
Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year to you and all our Bluebird friends!
Dear Pam,
DeleteA BBQ is a good way to go. It is great you completed projects at home. I always like to get things done before New Year!
Me loading the dog house that I couldn't hardly lift wasn't pretty! haha!
I hope your Christmas Eve gathering goes very well. Have a very happy Christmas Pam, with love Annabel.xxx
Hi Annabel, I am having a much need catchup with your blog, while things are quiet around here.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that gorgeous book you found, what awesome photos to make into cards etc.
Your two little lovelies look gorgeous in those dresses you made. I bought a similar style one for my young grand daughter for Christmas and it cost $25! Time I blew the dust off of my sewing machine and start making little girls clothes too.
I think I will steal your idea of gift bags instead of wrapping paper. A great way to use up excess material I have lying around. You come up with the best ideas Annabel :)
What a score with the doggy house, my mind boggles as to what beautiful creation you will make with it.
Well Christmas is over for another year. Time to access and prepare for the New Year ahead. I have just read through your old Vicky challenge post and think it is a marvelous idea to keep track of money saved. I have always said I save a lot more by staying at home instead of going out to paid work. I will add the challenge to my list of things to implement this coming year. And I am going to try and keep up with the gift making this year, somehow I always seem to start out full of gusto only to fall by the wayside later on. My garden keeps me pretty busy but I really must make more time to do things for me.
Lovely post as always,
Love Tania xxx
