Thank goodness for Fridays. They anchor me. In a sea of stuff to do I see instead what we did achieve. Stopping to breathe and consider is a good thing!
We did have a good week. Mostly it has been really mild weather and I can get so much done!
Some of the ways we built up the home, garden and pantry were...
I made a big slab of chocolate fudge then cut it into pieces to wrap. This is so easy and versatile.
My recipe is 3 cups milk choc chips or melts,
1 can condensed milk.
A dob of butter/margarine, maybe a desert spoon full.
Mix this all and melt in the microwave for one minute, stir and repeat until it is smooth.
Then stir in what you like, chopped apricot, mixed dried fruit, nuts, anything you want. I did glaze cherries. I would say about a cup.
I double this recipe and pour it to set in a dish lined with non stick baking paper. When it is well set carefully cut it as you wish.
We went for a drive to pick up two old baths. We got one for a cow trough. The other pink one was too heavy to lift. We tried everything but we could not move that thing. I am not giving up... I will try and get someone to help us! I thought what on earth could be nicer than a goose swimming around in a pink bath tub? Now I had this image I am not giving up!
My Uncle and Aunt visited Mum. Mum shared with me some of the goodies they brought with them from their garden including mint, parsley, preserved lemons and apricots!
Mum gave me ready rolled gluten free pastry and food for the chooks.
I met up with Wendy and it was a great day. We traded of course! I took eggs and spinach and came home with cherry tomatoes and rhubarb!
That day I was able to go to two op shops (thrift stores) and found a pure silk blouse. I am making scrunchies and pure silk are the ones being sold in beauty stores for huge prices!
Meanwhile I finished some other silk ones for gifts...
They feel so nice and also are a gift that fits in a card in the mail.
Mum came and I made scones and sent her home with some.
I made a big pot of spaghetti sauce. Enough for everyone. I am harvesting zucchinis now. I added a great heap of zucchini into my meat sauce before I added the tomato.
It turned out so well and made many meals. I gave the girls each a big container as well.
I found a new person to trade with. They grow a lot of Asian veggies and greens and would like to swap for eggs. I hope this goes well and becomes a weekly thing.
The fruit cake I made last week was cut into nine pieces. I just used purchased royal icing and rolled that out. I had edible glitter and biscuit cutters and used those to decorate them. They turned out pretty well and gave me nine gifts!
I have been sewing every day even if for only a few minutes. Most of the fabric is vintage material my neighbour gave me as she knew I would love it and she is moving house. She knows me well!
Now I am addicted to bag making. As I make them I have smaller and smaller bits of material to work with and making gift bags with those.
I am fancying up some with the vintage ribbons I found recently.
I have a different bag pattern to try. I made this one up but need a smaller one to use up smaller amounts of fabric.
I have done a lot of cooking for my daughter since Thomas was born. They gave me a huge roast pork, pork ribs and pork chops. This added a lot to my freezer!
The farm also had some rain! So all up it was a good week. I feel when I have a project I really love doing this speeds me up all day in order to get time to get back to the sewing table (in this case!) I do some of Laine's speedy clean ups and fifteen minute attacks! These are like the amount you get done when you have a phone call that visitors are ten minutes are away. Yes you can get a lot done in ten minutes at high speed! haha!
My presents are wrapped. We have our tree and lights up. It is really starting to feel like Christmas now!
I hope you had a good week. How did you get ahead this week? xxx
All that pork in your freezer is a huge blessing. Such a wonderful way for Chloe and Luke to say thank you for all your help and wonderful cooking. Having mild days and rain is something I am envious of. Mind you as I write this we have just had a very small coastal shower come through and it has cooled things down several degrees.
ReplyDeleteThis week I received a beautiful gift from another Bluebird. I had been feeling quite sad of late as I wont be seeing my Grandies until possibly mid next year. They had been planning to be here around now but Covid restrictions and now a transfer interstate, changed all the plans. This little gift lifted me right up out of my morbidness.
I have been planning a mini summer capsule wardrobe for me. I have lots of clothes that really are not far off being suitable only for the rag bag. I wear these around the house and in the garden but most definitely not to the shops or anywhere else. I found lots of fabric and patterns in my stash that suit my lifestyle. This morning I started cutting these out. Once made I will have four new tops, 2 dresses, 2 light kimono style over blouses and 2 pairs of trousers. This will give me many outfits for when I leave the property.
My DIL sent me a huge 10kg parcel of jewellery making supplies. I have never made jewellery before but now that I have all the beads and bits I will be learning a new craft. You tube will be my teacher.
I have my Spinning group Christmas luncheon tomorrow and my Quilting group Christmas morning tea on Monday. It really is feeling a lot like Christmas.
Life is Christmassy good.
PS. I purchased a small Lions Christmas Cake today. It cost $17. I will be going back to making my own again next year.
Dear Jane,
DeleteYes I love lots of meat in the freezer! I am hearing lovely stories of a lot of Bluebird friendships and kindnesses. This makes me very happy!
I saw already that your summer wardrobe is coming along in leaps and bounds!
Every time I see anything with beads now I think of what could be made. Many possibilities! Next year projects are lining up!
I saw beautiful homemade Christmas cakes in a local co op. Including large gluten free ones. Beautifully presented and weighted a ton. The prices were up to $75. So our baking is worth A LOT! We continually underestimate that I think. Have a great new Christmassy week! With love, Annabel.xxx
Mom's are the best and yours is a treasure. I love the pink bathtub idea also..hope you are able to get it somehow. I made fudge too and after tasting a few pieces gave some to family so it wouldn't be in the house!
ReplyDeleteDear Vickie and Annabel!
DeleteI’m confident that this pink bathtub will come to fruition! ..... Is there someone with a winch or hoist nearby?
We’ll wait and see! Haha!
Rachel
Dear Vickie, I am working on it! Yes fudge lurking around can be a problem! I have to package things up and get them out of the house asap too!
DeleteHave a very good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Those bags are just lovely. You have had a busy week, and it sounds wonderful. I can now see geese swimming in a pink tub!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.
Oh Annabel! Your bags are divine!!! Just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteIt was a slow week here. Not much in the way of getting ahead, but did maintain the housework well. I indulged in a couple of Christmas movies, too :) DD16 and I will be making fudge and cookies this weekend.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Those bags are gorgeous! I love the green bow on the first :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting your recipe for chocolate fudge; I think I will give that a try this weekend.
Have a lovely weekend.
Love, Heidi xx
Dear Heidi!
DeleteI love the effect of the bow around that bag, too! Annabel has a special touch, doesn’t she?!
Rachel
Dear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh when I saw November 11th as the post date. I know it was a typo, but I thought how clever to give yourself and entire extra month to prepare for Christmas and pantry storage.
The fudge looks delicious. Chocolate with cherries is a lovely combination.
A pink bathtub will be beautiful. My grandparents house, built in the early 1950's had a pink and gray bathroom. The bathtub was pink and I also felt like a princess when I was there and got to use it.
The bags you are making are gorgeous. I wouldn't be surprised if someone stopped you to ask where you purchased it and then requested one be made for them.
The Christmas tree is up here as well and the outside of the house is decorated. The thing I will miss most this Christmas is not being able to go to church. Our church has be almost exclusively online this year. My mom lives with us and we are not to go if we have family over 70 living with us. Blessings, Laura
Hi Annabel and everyone,
ReplyDeleteAnnabel, your fudge looks beautiful, what a nice gift! Beautiful bags, and I also just love those scrunchies. Maybe something to learn how to make next year.
Thank you so very much for your kind words when I was stressed about my husband having to go in to his work for a while; it helped so much, and he is back to working from home and all is well. Whew!
Our trees are up and decorated, and I've started wrapping gifts. I sent holiday cards from my card stash and made up a batch of soap for giving, made with peppermint essential oil and vanilla. My kitchen smelled so good! I've also spent some time cross-stitching and doing the finishing on some new ornaments for our living room tree.
This I feel like I did not get much accomplished, but I did my usual baking (waffles for the freezer, bread, and brownies) and cooked up some homemade turkey broth, spaghetti sauce, and pizza dough for dinner tonight. (We've been enjoying Friday date nights at home with homemade pizza, and it is a fun thing to look forward to.) All of the rugs and cabinets and the bedding in the guest room got a good washing, and I brought in some more lavender roses for bouquets inside. It is supposed to snow this weekend, so surely this is the last batch of blooms this year. I have so loved having them.
I hope everyone has a good week, and stays safe and well.
<3
Kathy
I smiled at the idea of a goose sailing about a pink bathtub. You MUST do a picture for us when you get it home and filled, lol.
ReplyDeleteWe went grocery shopping this week and I bought all I could. I wanted to leave some of my budget for unexpected things this month, additional meals or items to add to a meal.
I am trying my hand at apple scrap vinegar. I am using the peels and cores that I had cooked for jelly. It smells okay so far and has been watched daily. Fingers crossed. I figure I'm out nothing but what would have gone into compost and about 1/4 cup sugar if it fails and if it does well I'll have one more item I won't have to buy.
I continue to work on Gathering Fragments and using up all I can of what we have so that nothing is wasted.
And I am thinking thinking thinking all the time of how I can manage better, do more, plan better...I don't know it all even yet in my life and I won't stop trying!
Those fabrics are sumptuous, Annabel - drooling here. I love the pic with the sheep in the background...so Australian. I must say, I love your fudge-gifting idea: cut in bars and wrapped in celo with pretty ribbon. And the sugar decorations on the fruit cakes are splendid! So regal-looking,
ReplyDeletewho wouldn't love them?! Between the cakes and the fudge you have a lot of presents!
That was very thoughtful of Chloe and Luke to stock your freezer with pork -- they seem like such nice people (good kids).
Mike brought home a large bin liner (I think you'd say) of pine cones that had fallen in the parking lot of his workplace. They are big and beautiful! I've got a basket full of them sitting on the hearth and since it's Christmas-time, I've got my beloved (plastic) holly, poinsettia and pine boughs (I drag out every year) tucked in with them, making them look festive :)
Give Scout some luvvies from Aunt Mary and a kiss to Laffie, if you can ;D
Merry Christmas and loads of love,
Mary in SD
Dear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteEverything you've done looks so lovely. The bags are just gorgeous and having been making some I do agree that they are quite addictive to make. The silk scrunchies made from a recycled silk blouse is absolutely brilliant. The fudge recipe is wonderful and the same one I have used over the years. One of the things I sometimes do is use half chocolate chips and half butterscotch chips. It gives the fudge a rum flavor. My husband loves walnuts and mini marshmallows in his. The cakes with the fondant look so inviting.
In building my pantry the thing that really works for me is concentrating on stocking ingredients . I generally make all our condiments such as mayo, ketchup and mustard, as well as sauces. So simple to do . Flours, gluten free, almond, coconut. as well as unsweeteneed shredded coconut , almonds and flaxseed to make non-dairy milks, home grown dried herbs to make seasoning mixes, etc. and many more items too numerous to mention I love the books "A Cabin Full of Food" and "The Everlasting Meal", which have been my go to's for a number of years in eliminating food food waste and saving money on groceries, as well as the sharing of ideas amongst the Bluebirds.
Christmas cards and gifts have been posted. We did this during off hours to avoid crowds. I'm now looking forward to marathon baking and candy making to give to friends locally. The plan is to just put things on porches and then call and let folks know there's something on their porch for them. It seems kind of odd to have to do this but our Governor has issued a stay at homeand order that starts at midnight this Monday and goes until January 4th or later, kind of depending on what's going on with the virus stats. I have everything needed in my supplies. Today I will be making chocolate fudge, no bake peanut butter bars, pecan toffee, and tomorrow gluten free date nut breads, gluten free ginger shortbread cookies, white chocolate chip and dried cranberry cookies as well as some large cakes to decorate, slice and wrap. Now if I can just keep my dear husband from taking to many samples :) During the marathon meals will not be a problem as there are plenty in the freezer for days like these. I hope everyone has a good week ahead. Blessings, Cookie
Just seeing if my reply comes up before I waffle on! Testing. 1,2,3!
ReplyDeleteLorraine, Success! Full steam ahead waffle away please!
DeleteI do hope you can figure out some way to get that pink bathtub. What a novel idea. I like your bag pattern with the panel inset on the sides and bottom. I want to try your fudge recipe. Does that freeze okay if made ahead of time? I finished my scrap quilt for a Christmas gift and if I don't forget I will have something to post in the Tuesday Club! Nancy
ReplyDeleteDear Nancy,
DeleteI have not frozen the fudge but I think it would be ok. It keeps a good couple of weeks refrigerated too. Oh yes please I would love to see your scrap quilt! Well done! With love Annabel.xxx
The fudge and cakes look beautiful! These would make lovely gifts. I think I might make some this week. Every year around Christmas I make chocolate balls (rum balls without the rum), rocky road and sometimes coconut ice. I had some cream to use up so made homemade icecream by whipping the cream and adding condensed milk, so yummy!
ReplyDeleteAnnabel you got so much done and your fudge looks adorable as does your lovely handmade bags with the lovely vintage fabric and ribbons and without too. I am glad you are expanding your trading with those around you as it is lovely to trade for items you are not producing or don't have enough of :) .

Hi Annabel
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful packages of fudge. They look a wonderful treat. You have been very busy.
After surgery, then catching DD10's head cold I think I am finally feeling a little more like myself once again but the the cold is just lingering enough to be annoying.
Late last week I was able to get out all the presents that still needed wrapping and have sorted through lots of things that needed to be dealt with. At night when DD10 is in bed I use the kitchen bench to wrap as it is a large surface and the other end has the wrapped presents so then I just sort and take into the spare room. I should be finished tomorrow night and will then be able to bundle these into a box ready for packing into the car.
We have a friend's son on Wednesday so we are going to make gingerbread and decorate a batch each so we will have snacks and things for the car trip. We decided that we will buy a loaf of bread and take this and some butter for our breakfasts and we have thermal mugs so we will be set for most of the day. We will make chicken sandwiches for our lunch an just stop in a park and grab a cold drink . Thank goodness for the car fridge.
Your bags are just gorgeous. The material is beautiful. I have not had time to sew for a while but am looking forward to getting back to this next year. DD10 and I might just have to pull out our machines when we get back.
Shopping is pretty much done except for 2 lots of chocolates which I will buy once we are closer to our destination. I am being reminded that their is only 6 days before we leave and only 11 days until Christmas.
The rum balls and the coffee balls were all done at the end of last month thankfully and have been bundled up, with some handed out already. DP takes some as gifts for work, with a warning not to eat on the worksite due to random testing.
Hope you have a wonderful week this week.
Take Care
Aly xxx
