Feather Your Nest Friday, 6th November, 2020.

 The day is almost over and I am finally sitting down to review the week.   It was a good one!  

Mum and I travelled to see my daughter and family and it was a beautiful day.  The farm they live on has many old fruit trees.  The girls and I went walking with a basket to see what we could find.  We found a lot of lemons but not ripe yet.   I am teaching them things each time so we talked about when to pick fruit and when to leave it.   We found Mandarines that are going to be ready soon as well...


It was just a good day!  To see how the baby has grown, the country side looks lovely,  catching up with everyone ..  a happy day.

Nearer to home new baby Thomas is going well.  This week I took some meals and baked a big cake so this could be sliced up for work lunches and eaten as a desert. 

I made a big impossible pie...



And a double size banana cake.


I met my friend Wendy and she gave me some lovely big jars for my pantry.   That was also a very nice day!  I also checked the local op shop and found beautiful little boys clothes... farmer style.  My daughter loves the brand Country Road (the Aussie ladies will know) and I found five little pairs of jeans all Country Road and little overalls and pants from Pumpkin Patch brand as well.  The grand total for them all was $6.  I washed them all up ready for distribution.  I taught the girls to keep boxes marked with sizes ahead of what baby is wearing now.  So a box for 00, 1, 18 months,  2 and so on.  And to stash things away in the right group!  When you need to go up a size grab the next box.   So I know when I buy ahead the clothes will appear when needed.   I also found a little remote control John Deere tractor.  Thomas will have to like John Deere whether he wants to or not as his Dad is crazy on tractors.  So I grabbed that too! 


These kind of days are so nice.  I think I appreciate them more now than ever.  Several friends are in the UK and just going back into a months lockdown.  Another friend has just come out of a lockdown and has some freedom to go more than 5 kilometres.   Someone else I know was sick this week and suddenly it seemed that they might need to isolate for 14 days.  Life has changed!  We need to be ready that if this happens we are set up with everything we need to get through it.  I had my own fourteen days quarantine at one stage and this tested me out...   good supplies and meals in the freezer came into their own.  
If tomorrow you are told to stay home for two weeks or a month do you have everything you need?  We have to work on this!

I was able to get back into my sewing room.  After weeks of re arranging cupboards and having some shelves added I have it organised.  I was looking around thinking what to do next when I noticed the cows out the window.   This is the view when I am sewing...


I even love the old shed and the stone chimney.  

This week we had really mild weather.  I carted compost to improve my veggie patch. I did a couple of wheel barrows a day.  I planted strawberries, beans, cucumbers and some rock melons.  This is the weather to get things done!!  Later when it is hot it slows me down on the work outside. 


With beautiful Spring weather we have so many birds.  At dusk the birds are practically deafening.

When it actually gets dark they all knock it off so at least we can sleep! 

I have been thinking a lot about peace and contentment.  The world doesn't want us to be content.  SURELY we would rather be somewhere having our photos taken in front of some large thing.  SURELY was must be bored senseless at home?  But I am soo happy to be home or to be out in the garden.   It is beautiful!  There is so much to do.  
Everyone is talking about stress, mental health,  volatility,  anger,  worry...    At times even as I have been in the supermarket there has been a feeling ... a sense that everyone is fed up or anxious.   I think wherever we are this is prevalent. The US the virus and elections, the UK in many lockdowns and here we have also had a lot to deal with.  Everyone is stressed!     So your home, your garden, handiwork, sewing, books., writing, baking, preserving... whatever you are busy with and that you enjoy... if possible do these things.   There is so much madness and many things I think are pure evil.  This is scary and confronting.  There are things that upset me so much!    The media is not necessarily truthful and much of ours is more social engineering than actual news.    We really need to go back to basics.   Jesus is still King. We need to take care of our families and put on the whole armour of God.  I mean, in times of battle you need your armor!   

We need to keep our minds positive.  

Philippians 4:8

... whatever us true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. 

And we need to encourage others to think of these things especially the children. They hear and see so much!  They pick up everything!  

We need to look after our health.  We need to be extra kind and helpful.

There is a lot we can do.  We can make a big difference.  Be watchful, be prudent and look well to the ways of your household!   Be encouraged!

    Thank you for sharing the beauty in your week! The treasures sparkle more in darker times!

    For me, the week was full, with plenty of challenges, and also changes! There was paid work - all gardening jobs this week! There was lots of fresh air after a winter of working in a mask! Haha!! There was the completion of a run of bills! There was coffee and cake with one of my customers! There was the change to spending most of my time at home, after doing my budget, and there was the satisfaction of external house repairs going well!

    I have so very much to be thankful for! The Almighty has not let my enemies triumph over me!

    This is a treasure of a meeting place!

      That is a very true statement and nicely put about things sparkling more when it is darker!
      I think working outside in fresh air with no mask will be much better. We do what we have to do but fresh air is definitely a good thing.

  3. I'm sitting here eating one of the last of my tomatoes. I only put one little scraggly tomato plant in the ground and I've gotten an abundance of tomatoes off that one plant. I was thinking though, that's how God is. He's abundant, overflowing, and limitless. There's is no end to His goodness.
    I live in the US and am reeling right now from what's happened and happening in our presidential election. I'm going to pray this afternoon as I know this is the best thing I can do. All that's happening makes me want to run to my Heavenly Father and take refuge in Him. I know He's in control and has a plan.
    I look forward to your posts every week! They are always so interesting. Wow, those birds are really loud! I'm glad to hear they simmer down when it gets dark.
    I've been thinking too about your dad and how he encouraged you to move to the country and all that's happened since then. What a fine man he was and how he was looking after you right up until the Lord took him home. What a legacy. And how could he have known he would end up blessing us too with all the wonderful pictures and stories you are sending us from that farm!

    1. Dear Older and Wiser, Yes God is good and He can use one scraggly plant to produce so much. Or one ordinary person!
      I have been praying and watching what is happening. I feel I understand how you feel as I said I have had to go out in the garden and calm down!
      Thank you for such a kind comment. These noisy birds are not so noisy all year but they are deafening lol. I do think though of the abundance and like there is just no sign here at all of lack of birds/wildlife/abundance... it is glorious.
      Thank you for your words about Dad. We are really trying to continue what he planned and make the absolute most of life here and fully love it and appreciate it.     I didn't get a chance to comment last week, but I wanted to tell you that Thomas is lovely and I'll bet that Harper and Scarlett (and Sydney when he's a bit older) are smitten with their new cousin.
    Your posts are always so uplifting to read. Your baked goods look yummy. I've been pulling out recipes for fall desserts as well. here in the US the apples have come in. I agree even the grocery store is stressful now. My favorite way to shop, unless I need something specific also, is to pick six or seven things we always eat and just go in and buy multiples of those. Few items to hunt for and you're in and out quicker.
    I love your shed and stone chimney, what a peaceful view with the cows. The bird sounds are lovely. I picked up a bag of sunflower seed that last store trip for the birds. I always feed them through the cold winter and enjoy seeing them.
    Certainly a stressful week here in the states and not over yet. We do indeed have to find ways to destress and relax. I also find going for a walk or even just out in the sunshine of the backyard to be a great morale booster. Planning things and getting supplies for what might prove to be a long winter at home. Yes, we mustn't despair, Jesus is in control and He will give us strength.
    I 'm even ready to get out some Christmas decorations (except the tree) early to enjoy them longer. It's been that kind of a year. I found a few copies of Australia's version of Better Homes & Gardens magazine at the library They will be fun to read since Christmas falls in your summer.

      I love apple season as the heat is over then and so many apples come in. I got a lot of apples last year! I really hope to this year as well.
      It is amazing to me that we can life so far apart and even so both of us can feel the tension in the grocery store. I also buy a lot of the specials and not a lot else. This works out in the end as the specials rotate.
      Many people here are Christmas decorating early. I am seeing this comment everyday. The need to have that Christmas spirt/feeling early and for as long as possible. Hope I guess. Well I think I will get going too. I have started on cards and might get wrapping next week too I think. I quite like Better Homes and gardens magazine!   5. Dear Annabel, Thankyou for another encouraging post. Your little grandgirls - gorgeous in their hats and gum boots. The weather has been lovely here too. More chickens due this week here. Mumma hen has been doing a great job sitting patiently. Yesterday I also put some eggs in the incubator. I have only hatched eggs this way one other time, I would rather a Mumma hen looking after them. The weather is glorious here too. On Tuesday we ate a beautiful fish my daughter had caught the night before. Our tradition is a small bet each on one horse in the Melbourne Cup. I chose the winner which was fun. I love your op shop finds, I too had a good find this week - a beautiful Robert Gordon pottery, cake plate with a screw in handle, it is pink with flowers on it. I love it. Shortly my daughter and I are heading off to Nan's who is busy making a cake for Great Nan who turns 93 today. I agree with everything in your post. The more I stay home and concentrate on ordinary things, for example yesterday taking the time to hand wash my kitchen floor the calmer I feel. My daughter is 14 and as much as we try to shield her from the ugly sides of the world - they get in. We have had discussions this week that make me sad that I even have to discuss them to guide her through. I talk to her about making our home a safe haven, a place we all want to be where we can shut the world out. Stay safe and strong everyone. Love Clare

      I have thought about getting an incubator... but then I think of raising the hatched chickens as well as GETTING then to hatch. So I am thinking to get more Bantams so I have more good Mothers to do the work for me! It is exciting you have chickens due!
      Fourteen is an ages that they are going to hear and see a lot and it is harder to protect them. But talking as you do is the best thing. Lots of talking.
      Well done on picking the winner of the race. I am no good at that! Lovely op shop find.. you and me at pink flowers!
      It is beautiful to have Nan and Grand Nan. I hope she had a beautiful birthday!   6. I started the week as the chief elections judge (managing the polling place) in the small town where we have a vacation home. Counting absentees and early voting, our precinct had a 91% voter turn-out. We didn't anticipate any problems and didn't have any. People just showed up and voted! Our county's ballots were fully counted by 2:30 a.m. I am proud to have been a part of this process. I always tell people if they don't like the outcome to be sure and vote again in 4 years!

    This was the rest of my week--
    * I used a 20% off coupon for a $100 item at Bed Bath & Beyond. I didn't have a coupon, so I signed up for e-mails to get one. I was having trouble accessing the coupon, called customer support, and she showed me how to get it AND put another 20% off coupon in my account. I am getting a new quilt/bedspread for my daughter for Christmas. She accidentally put a big lengthwise tear in her old comforter that I was unable to fix, so she really needs one.

    *I paid the bills online, saving time and postage. This saves me $35-$40 year in postage and is so much quicker and easier. I was annoyed when I had to mail one in!

    * I sold our old modem on craigslist for $50.

    * Although I haven't been to the grocery store yet, this is the week of the big baking sale. It happens once a year. I will buy enough flour, sugars, etc., to last the entire year, plus butter and eggs are on sale, too. With the exception of a case of canned corn, my pantry will be fully stocked after I shop this afternoon.

    * Not frugal for me, but for a friend who called for my opinion of what would be the cheapest fabric to use to make a test-for-fit garment. I suggested that all of her pieces didn't have to be from the same fabric, so she could use up her scraps (and have some of mine, if she wanted!). I also reminded her she could sew different fabrics together to make a bigger piece.

    It was a good week here. Tomorrow I am finishing up Xmas and birthdays for the year and for January. Just a few gifts to buy.
    I picked Asian Greens and lettuce from the garden and we stocked the freezer with meat. I finished off one baby layette and have more on the needles. I was gifted hundreds of knitting needles and fabric in a huge piece.
    Jo and I were just talking last night of how blessed we are. So very much to be thankful for

  8. Hi Annabelle, The little girls in their hats are just darling. Lucky you to get those apples. I have not gotten any this year. Debating if I should buy organic from the grocery store or just go get a half bushel from the market. At the rate I am going I will probably end up with none but have bought a few sugar free jars of applesauce from Aldi's just in case. Glad you and your Mom could go visit your daughter. The virus cases are on the uprise here so I hate to venture out anymore than I have to. I gave up on making the Impossible pie as could not find GF self rising flour. Pinned a quilt top, batting and back together today for a grandson. I have decided to tie it. That is what my Mom always did. Have a good week-end. Nancy

    1. Nancy apple puree is a very good food if you have not been well. I am hoping to make much more for everyone especially the babies. Apples are just so versatile. But I see with the virus as it is I also would not be venturing out more than absolutely necessary. You can oder GF flour on Amazon I am pretty sure if that is a help. King Arthur sell it I know, also Red Hill and Arrowhead brands. With these you can make basically any regular baking into GF baking.
      Walmart say they carry it but I have never been into a Walmart!
      The quilt will be a beautiful gift for your Grandson! With much love Annabel. xxx

    Congratulations on on the newest addition to the family. Little Thomas is just so sweet and perfect in every way. It is so kind of you to make meals.   11. Life on the land clearly agrees with you all Annabel. Congratulations on your growing family. I hope things are more settled now that restrictions have been lifted. We were so fortunate in our state, much as our friends in the Southern states of Australia were not pleased to be denied access to our beaches. We replanted out lots of French Lavender at home this week. What was there, was a few years long in the tooth, and needed an overhaul. It will look lovely in the coming months. Herb pots are flourishing, and with an end in sight to my corporate role, I am both proud to have contributed financially to my families coffers, and also to have helped many other families see a way through their struggles. It's been rewarding, but I'm pleased to return to home and hearth. Wishing you well for the week ahead. Mimi
