Feather your Nest Friday, 13th November, 2020.

I am happy to have another nice week to report.    It was a week of this and that.   Some sunshine and some rain.  Some cooking and some crafts.

I used paper napkins to decoupage pots.  Firstly I painted them white and then used the napkins for the images and then finally then sealer.   I made eight different ones.

A lot of the crafting is over on The Tuesday Afternoon Club.   With Christmas coming so soon we are working on a lot of gifts and baking!

I got busy and made up a double batch of laundry liquid.

Vicky sent me some scented soap beads.  These ones smell like rose and vanilla.  They made this soap smell beautiful!

Notice the cute little packet.  Vicky sent me a heap of different scents in little paper bags she sewed up.   The whole parcel smelled beautiful!
The laundry liquid recipe is here....   How to beat rising prices like Nana did, in the laundry.   This series seemed timely when I was writing it but it seems even more timely now!

I made a lot of cards and gift tags.

All week I kept at it.  I used a book from the thrift store and lots of delicate vintage trims that Rachel gave me.  It was a lovely project.   It kept me happy and content in every spare moment.
Then I packaged them up into parcels to make gifts...

These helped out my gift cupboard a little bit.

Now I am working on little stamped paper bags.  I am eventually making them up into parcels of ten. They are good for things like the gift of saved seeds.  Little packets of anything!

This week I was able to go see my Daughter, Granddaughters and baby Sidney.   I made a tray of sausage rolls to take with me.     Also some little cakes for the girls...

While I was cooking I doubled the recipe and made a loaf cake which was sliced up for packed lunches.

We went on a walk to pick roses.   Roses are everywhere just at the moment.   Lucy's garden is an old garden she is restoring.   We made up vases of flowers in the house and I had some to bring home.  When we do this we make a case of flowers for the girls rooms.  They are quite particular abut which flowers they are having in their own vases!    My Nana Brink always picked and arranged flowers.  It was a big part of her life.  She saw all kinds of things as potential containers for flower arrangement.   I hope I am passing this on.

The roses in Lucy's garden are the old fashioned roses that perfume the whole house.

On Buy, Swap and Sell I found a little tank.   Andy built a stand for it, now the chicken house has a water tank.

Notice the front door is open.  (This is the black.)   The chickens are out roaming from 11am  to 4 :30 pm.  The other night at dinner time I saw a fox walking down the driveway!    This morning Andy saw Scout take off like a rocket and she had seen a fox off in the paddock and was trying to get him.   So I have resolved to always have Scout around when the chickens are out and I have to never forget to shut them in before dusk.  Even then I have to hope and pray I think.

Last weekend I went to Mum's and took her some GF scones.

We had some for afternoon tea too.   With most things I have just changed my normal recipes to GF by using gluten free flour.  Mostly it works!  This resolved most of the aches and pains I always suffered.

I have some good news.   I have been talking to Laine.   Many of you know Laine from her Laine's Letters many years ago.  These got me through the early years of bringing up my girls. She encouraged me so much!   I always felt I was reading a letter from a friend.
For those that don't her letters are still available online.    If you need encouragement as a wife, mother, homemaker, budgeter... Christian... you would never spend time better than reading these letters.   Time has not faded them.
You can find her old letters here Laine's Letters.
The good news is she has decided to write new letters and share them with us.   Laine said she is building her pantry up like never before.  We are both seeing things we have never seen before in our lifetimes.   With this we decided that new words are needed for new times and that while there is an opportunity it is a good thing to do,  to encourage!

I hope you had a good week.  How did you build up your home, pantry or garden?  I love to hear.  We have taught each other a lot and celebrated our progress week by week. This has helped me all year. xxx

  2. Dear Annabel, Such gorgeous images, so inspiring! Well done on your productive week. I have had a good week too. I am still working towards early Christmas readyness and also finally sorting all my digital photos - which is a tad overwhelming as we have so many different devices and I like my albums in sequential order. Yesterday 4 gorgeous yellow fluffy chicks hatched under a good bantam little hen. These eggs were 5 days overdue. I had lost hope for any hatching and was about to take the eggs off her presuming them infertile. Well, another lesson learned - Mumma Hen's know better than me. She hatched 4 out of 6 eggs and only got off when she knew the other two weren't going to hatch. Patience in the hen house is required. This evening as the sun was nearly gone - I took a photo of the four chicks, lined up in a row, soaking up the sunshine, (there was a crack in the door letting a line of sun in). I loved seeing that. This week has been a week of little things, I have managed to do a lot of long put tasks and are feeling much better for it. Money was a little tight this week, I haven't been grocery shopping, I nearly worried, but, then after cleaning and rearranging the fridge and looking in my pantry I realized I have plenty to get us through the next week. I am working on establishing little habits such as washing out egg shells immediately when I am cooking. Then as soon as a have a bowl full, taking them out and surrounding plants with them. I always aspired to do this but found applying it hard. Also I have a chocolate chip recipe that only needs yolks. I found a simple coconut macaroon recipe that needs the whites - I put the recipes together - to remind me to do both at once and not waste the whites. This is an achievement to me. Love Clare

I find that studying hens is such a rewarding, and never ending, experience! I appreciate your hen story on patience!

    2. Dear Clare, Oh how good you got ducklings!! I am hoping for the same as a hen is on duck eggs here too. I think maybe some duck varieties take longer than others to hatch. I have been looking up incubation periods as Chloe has a hen on Guine flow eggs... they take longer than chook eggs and ducks do too. It is interesting. But it is awesome you have ducklings!
I hope to do some work on Christmas in the next week myself. Time is going by fast so I better get a move on.
Well done on your use of both the egg shells and egg whites. If you want a change at any time look up Nigella Lawson Meringues recipe. It is so easy and would use up whites. I love how they turn up. A sweet desert is individual sized pavlovas. I use this recipe. It seems like a real treat. Saying this I need to do them again!
I battled to use my egg shells and just started being better at that so we are on the same page! Mum and I both have been planting your sunflower seeds. Mums are up about 4 inches high and looking amazing. Mine are smaller. I am going to plant some more tomorrow! Have a lovely weekend Clare. What a nice week! With love, Annabel.xxx

  4. The flower pots are lovely! I love old roses, too. They are so fragrant and fleeting. One must enjoy them fully while they are blooming! The little girls are getting so tall!

Our country is in such turmoil that it is best to just keep working at what needs to be done and stay at it. And keep the news off! I had an old notebook with recipes in it that I sorted out to add new printed ones to and found some lost and loved recipes from years ago. My husband noticed that a shelf was looking as if it would break in our food storage are and rebuilt that with materials we had on hand. We were able to stock up on some items this week and add to our stock. We finished the big job of going through all the inside food storage space and now it looks so neat and it is good to know better what we have. My husband repaired the holes that were cut in the walls to repair a plumbing leak. We have been holding back a bit on Christmas shopping since I did not know who could make it home for the big day. Now we are close to knowing so we can begin. Sadly it looks like our kids in Germany will not be able to travel and will have to wait for a summer visit. But, they could likely stay longer then.

    Have a good weekend everyone!

I am working on Christmas too. I think tomorrow (Sunday I will get into organising some parcels to post and some wrapping. Have a lovely weekend! With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Hi Annabel and everyone,

Annabel, your photos are beautiful - I loved seeing them! Lots of pretty things to look at this chilly Friday morning. The girls and their flowers are so sweet.

This week I did lots of baking to get ahead (sandwich bread, waffles, cookies) and made a big batch of bone broth for the freezer, and frozen single-serve oatmeal discs (in muffin tins) for breakfasts. All of the rugs got a good washing and my husband made a few small repairs. Everything adds up! I have some cream to use up so will probably make cream scones this weekend.

My husband has to go in to work next week (we are very lucky in that we both have been able to work from home throughout most of this pandemic), so I have everything ready for him to take lunches and cloth masks and extra hand sanitizer. He should be the only one there, and safe, but it is a little nerve-wracking since our area is experiencing a surge. To help with my anxiety, I've been doing a little more crafting than usual and finished knitting 1 cowl, most of another one, and have stitched a few ornaments for Xmas.

My lavender rosebush seems to love this cold weather - it is strange, but a gift that I am thankful for - so I cut a bunch of roses to make my kitchen pretty. It is a huge mood lifter!

I hope everyone has a good weekend, and is safe and well.

    1. Dear Kathy,
Thank you so much! Yes, everything does at up. It is amazing. You did a lot! The bone broth is very good. I have a lot of faith in the goodness of these broths.
If your husband is at work alone then I think the things like door handles will be the worst hazards... also depending on the transport to get to work. Get him to wipe down his work surfaces and things like computer and so on. There seems to be big surges in numbers in many countries and lots of lock downs.
The lavender rose sounds gorgeous! That would be a favourite for me! Flowers make me happy too... and I agree that keeping busy on your crafts is good. It is soothing and I think knitting is perfect. The cowls sound lovely! I hope the week goes well Kathy, with love Annabel.xxx

  6. You are so creative and truly find the beauty in everyday things. Your granddaughters are beautiful and how lovely that they are learning this same appreciation even at their young age. Plus - I love their lilac wellies!

I hadn't planned on a lot of grocery shopping this past week but with infection rates going up and more govt. announcements due this afternoon I decided that I'd better get a few fresh things. Stopped in at the store yesterday before going to the office and bought milk, cream, fresh fruit & veg. Just wanted that top off.

Tomorrow is to be nice and sunny so I will take out the garbage & recycling, exchange some library books and pick up some more of the same (fresh items) and combine this with a long walk home and I'll have my exercise for the day as well. I'll do this early in the morning and be home before it gets even slightly busy. We are being asked to stay home as much as possible and as I'm not due back in the office until next Wed. I intend getting all my pre-Christmas cleaning done before I start to bring up some decorations.

I did buy a tin each of Belgium chocolate luxury biscuits. shortbread and fancy chocolates so that is Christmas treats sorted. I will do a bit of baking closer to the time for some neighbours but since I won't be seeing any family (they live out of town) and only one friend (my one other singleton in our bubble) I don't want to have too many temptations on hand. I'm used to being the one who throws the parties so it is tough to cut back.

I hope everyone has a safe week, wherever you are in the world.

Well since you wrote this about your infection rates increasing we also have been struck by an outbreak! And already the stores are very affected by this. What amazes me is how fast things change.
It is very smart to shop at a quiet time. We need to think of these things and plan.
Your Christmas treats sound beautiful. I have been trying to get ahead for Christmas incase of shortages etc... and now I better get a move on and do some more! Thank you Margie, with love Annabel.xxx

  7. Dear Annabel,

Your granddaughters are beautiful...and Scarlett is getting so tall! I haven't commented in a couple of weeks, but I wanted to say that Chloe and Luke's little baby boy is so cute! Congratulations to you all.

Your crafting looks beautiful. I miss seeing those posts, but I imagine having it all on Facebook has saved you a million headaches and hours posting it all on your blog!

We had a spell of very warm weather here so we were able to get some needed outdoor painting done, and I got my garlic planted for next year. Hooray! Now I'm concentrating on getting ready for Christmas. I have most of my shopping done, including most of the food, so I am feeling good about that.

Everything is looking all lovely and growing there as over here we have lost most of our leaves and are heading into winter. Truth be told, I am looking forward to some relaxation time inside with my knitting needles by the fire! :)

Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Looking forward to new Laine's Letters!

I cannot wait to read new letters from Laine! I might even go back and revisit her old ones. Please let us know when she starts writing again and a link 🙏

I’ve had a busy week with visitors, and my daughters high school graduation, it felt like organising her for a wedding with the dress and hair etc, but she was so beautiful and we all had such an enjoyable night after such a horrid year.

  9. It is so lovely reading about the things you have been doing. Especially with the roses and gorgeous girls. Do be careful about your chooks. Many years ago, we were on holidays and a neighbour was looking after our two bantam hens. One had sat on a clutch of eggs from full size hens and the chickens were going great. One morning the neighbour noticed a fox with a chicken in it's mouth, then again. It was our chickens. He forgot to lock them up after letting them out the day before. We had one chicken and a sick bantam left. Do remember.

Thank you! Thank you too for the warning. I am being very strict. I put the chickens in early and I know now to always have Scout out and on guard. She sees a fox and she goes crazy chasing it. So I think this is out protection. I hope! I count all chickens too before I shut the gate and double check! Then I re check the gate is latched well. So I hope we will be ok. It is very distressing if a fox gets chickens and this happened to my daughter. A fox killed every one.

  10. Hi Annabelle, Everything you do seems to turn out so pretty. Did you decoupage the napkins to the pots? I am thinking maybe your GF scones you took to your Mom's are like our biscuits? Have you ever tried Einkorn flour? I have not but wondering if my GF body could handle that. Have read that some people can. I shared my GF cupcake for my birthday and water tea with our great granddaughter Nora who is three. We both had fun. My hubby bought a GF cupcake and put a candle on it for me and our daughter bought me four more GF cupcakes. My husband asked how much a GF cake was. They said $45 for one to feed six. Can you imagine! Sure glad he just got the cupcake! I am excited and looking forward to Laine's letters once again. Covid is really on the uprise here. Nancy

  12. Hi Annabel,

The pots that you decoupaged, cards made, baking and liquid laundry detergent look divine :) . Where did you get those lovely rose and polka dot muffin cases from ? as they are just so pretty. I love the way you have set up the new tank on a stand for a water supply for the chickens too and wonderful they are kept safe in their pen from marauding foxes.

We are getting things done gradually around the home in zones as my caring needs for DH have increased dramatically while he is recovering. I find if I work where I am in a grid that I get far more done if I clean and organise the whole zone and the home is staying clean and tidy. Still have some work to do in the gardens with harvesting but I will get to that when the time is available.

Before we left for DH's operation we were able to get so many things done and have pressure cleaned the whole outside of the home so now it is clean and doesn't look like a red dust storm had hit it. I planted some sweet corn, beans and cucumber and they are now taking off so well with all the rain we had while we were away and now when we are back home. I am hoping to have a good crop to blanch and freeze for the freezer and some salad items for the upcoming hotter weather.

Over the last couple of weeks we have saved $587.35.

    Purchases -
    - Bought markdown fruit loaf and potato salad saving $2.41 on usual prices.
    - Purchased 20 blocks of Old Gold chocolate on half price sale and by using $20 in free rewards dollars saving $70 in total.
    - On markdown I purchased 1.853 kg of macro organic free range chicken drumsticks reduced from $5.50 to $3.24 kg saving $4.18 or 41.02% on usual supermarket prices.
    - Bought 4 x mouse traps in a discount variety store saving $10.02 over buying like ones in the supermarkets.

    In the kitchen -
    - We made 6 loaves bread from scratch saving $20.94.
    - Made all meals from scratch.

    Home cleaning and organising -
    - Pressure cleaned the outside of our home/patio and scrubbed and pressure cleaned our cement paths around the home saving us $480 over hiring someone to clean it for us for 7.5 hours work.
    - Swept the paths around the home after heavy rain and debris got on them.
    - Organised the tinned vegetables in date order and restacked the cartons in our food storage room.

    In the gardens -
    - Planted cucumber, sweet corn and green bean seeds in the gardens.

Have a wonderful week ahead everyone :).

    1. Lana, It was good to see your post! Our seasons are opposite yours. so it is always interesting to read yours. Last weekend, we had 15 inches of snow, so winter is truly here in Fairbanks, Alaska. We had a good garden this year and are thankful for whatever we were able to freeze and store. We will have potatoes for eating through May and then seed potatoes for another year's gardens. We have plenty of celery for a year also and a sizeable number of carrots. All of these make a great basis for soups and stews.
We are seeing some shortages of specific food items, but are comfortable with our pantry. Our biggest issue is trying to provide a variety of meals, but we are blessed to have choices.
And Annabelle, I hope you are getting lots of baby snuggle time in! As a retired nanny, that is one of my favorite ages.
Stay safe everyone, and be careful. I look forward to your comments each week and thank everyone who is part of this community.

  14. What a lovely week you had, Annabel! The flower pots and cards are gorgeous. Do you cut and glue the images you cut out and the trims to card stock and, if so, what kind of glue do you use so it doesn't wrinkle the paper? Thank you!

Our pantry was improved further last week when my husband surprised me with another huge set of shelving for the pantry. (I had thought I was getting one small shelf!) So the pantry is able to hold ALL non-perishable food now, and it was fun to clean and organize it. I will be adding more to it over the next few weeks. The shelving was from free materials so even better!

We worked on homemade Christmas and birthday gifts last week, too. I come up with the ideas, and my husband does the woodworking :) So far we have a small spice shelf for our younger daughter who is just starting out with homemaking in her own apartment. I have been saving glass spice jars from purchased spices and removing the labels. I bought some chalkboard labels and am filling those jars from my own big spice collection and will write on the labels. He also made her a wooden plant holder, as she loves houseplants. Other gifts he is working on is a wooden plant stand for my mom and a metal raised platform bed for our younger daughter so she has more floor space in her bedroom.

I did some sewing this week, making a curtain for the living room and helping our daughter with her sewing class projects for school. She is homeschooling, in 9th grade, and we are doing sewing as one of her classes. We also organized the sewing area this week to help us be able to sit down and get to work on something quickly!

Today we are bringing home a freezer given to us and will be getting that cleaned up and set up for stocking up more food storage. A fun weekend is in the works!

    1. Dear Jenny,
The napkins are usually two or three ply. Carefully separate these layers so you have just the layer with the image. I very roughly cut that out. I paint glue on the pot and sit the image over it... then very gently press it into place and with my brush dab and brush glue over the top. It must be a watery clear drying glue... it works like a transfer really.
For the cards... it is best to use a solid glue stick and then something like.a credit card to smooth it out. Runny glue really does often dry with a lumpy look as you say. But a credit card to smooth it out right away really helps.
Well done on your pantry improvements and five starts to your husband! That is wonderful.
The spice shelf for your daughter is a beautiful gift. Everything your husband is working on sounds amazing!
I love that your daughter is sewing as part of school. This is such a valuable skill.
A freezer is a great asset! With this and the shelves your pantry really came on this week! I am sorry I was slow to reply. I just posted a new post and you will see why! It was not an average week! With love Annabel.xxx

Another lovely week for you filled with beautiful productivity. The are amazing and look as if they could be models for a magazine. I love the decoupaged flower pots. I have found that flower pots make wonderful containers for gifts of all kinds. And that is such great news about Laine writing again. I am really looking forward to this.
It has been a week here of this and that as well. I made butternut squash soup with the squash from the garden and bone broth I had in the freezer, yielding several quarts of soup, made more gluten free English muffins as well as regular ones for my husband. Baked GF chocolate chip cookies using almond flour, yielding 4 dozen cookies. The garden is just about done for our growing season with just broccoli and cauliflower remaining. We continue to add and amend the soil. I'm looking forward to having more time to just curl up with a good book in my spare time (ha ha). Thanksgiving cards are finished as well as November birthday cards. Now it's on to cards for Christmas and December birthdays. I've also been making notecards for Christmas gifts, as well as reusable makeup remover scrubbies and goats milk soap with honey for the ladies. For the men, soaps with sea sat or coffee grounds to scrub hands. I also have more vanilla brewing for gifts. I received a catalogue in the mail that was charging $89 for 8 oz of vanilla. I can't even imagine. Wishing everyone a good weekend and week ahead. Stay healthy, stay safe. Blessings, Cookie

Also I published Laine's Letter and she has sent me three more. She is on a roll. I will publish these soon too. It is a big lift for me, a miracle really! Congratulations on your new Grandson! I hope and pray your daughter is doing much better. That would be such a worry. With two daughters who just had baby boys I can relate so much. Love and hugs Peggy. Love Annabel.xxx

  18. I hope to read some (if not all) of Laine's Letters. I think I learned a while back that she lives within an hour of me, if I remember correctly! Now Scarlett and Harper have really closed the gap in size. I couldn't believe it; you can't really tell who's the younger sister. And do I see Auburn color in Scarlett's hair? Wow!! Absolutely stunning. Oh, how I do love old English roses and, as you said, their scent that fills the whole room!
I have been stocking up on foods to cover the winter months should we go in to lockdown again ;( I hear the Guv'ner has declared we are in the "Purple Tier" which restricts dining even outdoors at restaurants and other things. @#$%^&* Looking forward to moving out of CA as soon as we can.
Please take good care; love you much and your family and animals.

    1. Dear Mary,
I think yes Laine is not too far from you. I have three more letters to post. Laine is on a writing roll!
Yes the girls are basically the same height. People ask if they are twins and also who is oldest and who is youngest.
I love the old roses too and the scent. To me it is so gorgeous.
Purple tier!? Ok well read my new post... I am so late to reply to you because of the week we had... (you will see!) With love Annabel.xxx

  19. Hi Annabel,
Your granddaughters always make me smile. Such sweet little faces and their clothes are so beautiful. I love all your creations from the week and the water tank is a great idea! I've been feeling distracted about our election mess and have prayed a lot for the right outcome.
My granddaughter came this week and we swapped chickens! She brought me nine babies (4-6 weeks old) and took home a few of my older hens who haven't been laying. We worked on setting up a temporary green house on the back patio to protect our potted fruit trees from freezing. I think next year we will invest in a real green house as this scaffold/tarps set up is a job besides being downright ugly! Greg put an irrigation system (using PVC pipe) together for our big garden. I was happy to have that set up but we are desperate for rain!
While my granddaughter was here we had a girls' day out and found some good bargains shopping and enjoyed a rare meal out. There is a restaurant in a near-by town that has wonderful serve-yourself buffet style meals, and they charge $7.49 a pound . We decided that was a deal and the food was out of this world. It was a treat for both of us and I was glad to have a freezer meal for Greg to heat up at home. He is never brave enough to go with us on our outings :D.
I have one apron to sew for a Christmas gift and I will be done except for wrapping! This week I'll be climbing in to the attic to retrieve wrapping paper, etc.
I am looking forward to Laine's letters again. I think hers was the first blog I ever followed. Both of you have been such a blessing and inspiration to me and I know many others. I hope this finds everyone in good health. It is so much fun coming here and seeing all the progress being made! Have a good week, Bluebirds.

    1. Dear Pam,
Thank you! I am here and I am praying! It might sound odd that being in Australia it matters so much to me. But it does and democracy matters and it matters to the whole world. Let alone you and my other friends there. Laine has had a lot to tell me on this...
How lovely to have chicks! That is great. And an irrigation system is fantastic.
It is lovely you could enjoy this time with your granddaughter. Sounds like you have a beautiful day together. This is priceless!
Well done on being so organised with Christmas! I am wrapping too now. I am please each time I get a little bit more done.
I am amazed how everyone knows Laine! She is more famous than she realises! I put up a letter and she has sent three more! I will get them posted in order she sends them to me. You can imagine how excited I am to get a letter! It is basically a miracle ss far as I can see that she ever wrote to me in the first place!
The thing is she lost her website. But my friend and I copied all her letters and had them and we printed them and found her address and posted them to her! And this is how she got her copies back and we made friends. Amazing. Well I am very blessed! Thanks so much Pam. With love Annabel.xxx
